THE CASE FOR POWDER

The only format where the consumer experiences the product, not just the result

A capsule disappears in seconds. A tablet does the same. The consumer has no relationship with either – they take it, move on and form their opinion entirely on how they feel over time.

Powder is different. A consumer mixes it, watches it dissolve, tastes it and feels the texture. Every use is a sensory interaction with the brand. That means powder gives a brand something most supplement formats can’t – a daily moment of product experience that either builds loyalty or erodes it.

It’s also the only format where dose size is genuinely unlimited. A 30 g serving of collagen peptides, a 25 g serving of protein, a complex fibre and prebiotic blend – none of these are achievable in a capsule or tablet. Powder exists because certain categories of supplementation simply require it.

That’s who powder is for: brands building in high-dose categories, brands where the consumer experience is part of the product value and brands that want a format consumers interact with every day – not just swallow and forget.

Powder earns its place when at least one of the following is true:

The active dose is too large for a solid unit form. A single serving of hydrolysed collagen typically runs 5–10 g. A serving of protein runs 20–30 g. A full greens blend may contain a dozen botanical ingredients at meaningful doses. None of these fit in a capsule or tablet without asking the consumer to take a handful of them per serving – which most won’t. Powder is the only practical format.

The consumer experience is part of the product. Sports nutrition, beauty powders and functional wellness blends compete partly on taste, texture and ritual. The morning collagen stir-in. The post-workout shake. The greens drink before breakfast. These aren’t just supplement habits – they’re lifestyle habits. A product that tastes wrong or mixes badly loses that slot permanently.

The brand needs flexibility across serving sizes. Capsules dose by unit. Powder doses by scoop – which means the consumer can adjust their intake, making powder better suited to products where the optimal dose varies by body weight, activity level or individual response.

The formula contains ingredients that degrade in solid compression. Some enzymes, probiotics and plant extracts lose potency under the heat and pressure of tableting. A powder avoids that entirely.

Where powder is not the right choice: low-dose single-active formulas, products where portability and discretion matter more than dose, and formulas where taste would be a barrier without significant flavour work.

WHO POWDER SUITS

The right format for these categories. Not always the right format for everything.

HOW IT'S MADE

From raw ingredient to finished, filled jar – what actually happens?

Powder manufacturing looks simple from the outside. The reality involves more formulation decisions than almost any other supplement format.

Ingredient sourcing and intake testing. Every raw material goes through incoming inspection and QC testing before it is accepted into stock, carried out in-house or through accredited external labs depending on the parameter, and checked against current EU regulatory requirements.

Blend development. The active ingredients are combined with carriers, flow agents and – where required – flavour systems and sweeteners. The ratios matter: too much of a hygroscopic ingredient and the powder clumps, too little carrier and it doesn’t flow through filling equipment consistently. These parameters are set during R&D, not adjusted during production.

Homogenisation. The blend is mixed to achieve uniform distribution of actives throughout the batch – so that scoop one and scoop 3,000 contain the same active concentration. This is tested and confirmed before filling begins.

Flavour development. For flavoured powders, the flavour system is built around the specific protein or collagen base – not applied from a generic library. Whey protein requires different masking to pea protein. Marine collagen carries a faint oceanic note that needs to be addressed at the carrier level, not just the flavour level. We develop and test flavour during formulation.

Particle size confirmation. Mixability – how cleanly a powder disperses in water without clumping or leaving residue – is a function of particle size and surface properties of the blend. Confirmed before pilot batch.

Pilot batch. Everything a full production run involves, at a fraction of the volume. It’s how we confirm the formula performs before scaling it.

Filling and packaging. Jars or stick packs, filled on dedicated lines, labelled and packed in-house. Artwork is supplied by the brand, our team manages production from print through to finished carton.

Batch release. Every finished batch goes through final QC – potency, identity, microbial count, heavy metals and moisture – before a Certificate of Analysis is issued and the batch is released for shipment. Not every test applies to every product; what’s required is agreed with you upfront and confirmed in the specification.

Common questions

What brands ask us about powder manufacturing?

What powder categories do you manufacture?

Protein, collagen, greens, fibre, electrolyte, immunity and functional wellness blends – in jars and stick packs. If your category isn’t listed, share the brief and our R&D team will confirm whether the formula works in powder form.

For most actives, absorption is similar across solid formats. Where powder has an advantage is in dose – a serving can carry active quantities that would require multiple capsules, which removes a compliance barrier for consumers. For certain sensitive ingredients, powder also avoids the heat and pressure of tablet compression, which can affect potency.

Flavour stability is built into the formulation, not assumed. The flavour system is developed around the specific base ingredient – protein source or collagen type – and stability tested across the product’s full shelf-life window. We confirm flavour at pilot batch and at release, not just at development.

Plastic and glass jars in various sizes, stick packs and sachets. Blending, filling and all packaging are handled in-house. Many brands run jars for their core range and add stick packs for trial sizes or on-the-go positioning once the formula is validated.

Yes – and many brands do exactly that. A collagen or greens formula can often be adapted across formats from the same active blend, which means one R&D investment and one quality system for multiple SKUs. This is worth discussing at the brief stage if multi-format positioning is part of your roadmap.

MOQ is confirmed per project during the quote, and varies by formula complexity and format. Pilot batches are available for new formulations – conditions confirmed at the quoting stage.

Identity, potency, heavy metals, microbial count and moisture – confirmed before any batch is released. The Certificate of Analysis covers all parameters relevant to the formula.

For an existing or private label formula: approximately 10–12 weeks from purchase order. Custom formulation, including flavour development and stability testing, adds time – confirmed per project.
